2018 Inktober Challenge Wins & Why You Should

Every year Inktober roles around since Jake Parker invented this monumental challenge to draw every day in October. I always intend to participate and set myself up mentally for the challenge. However, by the time October rolls around, I am so busy I cannot stick with the challenge. This year I decided instead of doing Inktober, I would paint an oil painting. Small wins. For someone who works two jobs, even one painting is a commitment.

Pumpkin Painting for Inktober

The subject of the painting was inspired by seasonal vegetables. I have to say this because of the subject I picked. I don’t celebrate Halloween. I will never celebrate it and never have. There are many reasons and I will not get into them here. Down below are some resources in case you are interested in the reasons why I do not celebrate this holiday. On that note, I picked pumpkins and a squash for my subject. I will also be doing a red corn husk and various interestingly shaped vegetables.

The reason I picked this subject is because seasonal vegetables come in beautiful colors and unique shapes/textures. Pumpkins are an interesting subject to paint and very challenging when it comes to mixing colors. I experimented with using alizarin crimson and Naples yellow, along with bright yellow.

Overall I am happy with this painting and it is in the final stretches of being completed. I still need to add the middle tones to the shapes and some detail. I’m hoping to finish it by the end of the month and then move on to a series of colorful fall vegetables. I’m also thinking of doing pineapple. Food is definitely my favorite subject to paint.
