Marine Painting Course With William Kalionzes
One thing comes to mind when I think of marine painting, large ships, clouds, and harbors. Lots of inanimate objects you have to work very hard to make interesting. Well. In this class we studied the techniques that make even the most shipyard painting come to life.
Last week William Kalionzes held a private marine painting art class in his studio in Newport Beach, CA. We started with the basics of doing a watercolor under painting over a sketch similar to the technique used by oil and acrylic painters. We began with cover watercolor board with two main colors choosing a cool and warm color. Then we blocked in areas of middle values.
He began the class by showing this beautiful marine painting as an example of what can be done with gouache and watercolor. The clouds appear almost purple and grey against the cerulean sky implying a storm. The light portrayed over the water is both delicate and elegant creating a sense the boat is moving swifly.
I highly recommend if you would like to learn marine painting that you take William Kalionzes' classes. He teaches regularly at Orange Coast College both painting and drawing. I learned about his background in illustration and fine art along with decades working as an art director in his fundamentals of illustration course.
His work is exceptional and his techniques are traditional methods that produce realistic landscapes. You can find his site here. Check the schedule at Orange Coast College if you would like to sign up for any of his courses.
