How to Create A Dynamic Space Romance Scene

img048.JPG

Space Odyssey Romance is a day dream inspired illustration. I used watercolor and ink for this piece.

The idea behind this illustration was to create a spaceman offering flowers to a martian girl. He is in love with a martian, hopelessly. He offers her flowers from mars terrain he picks as gravity resists. Guided by fierce love and attraction in a Romeo and Juliet by space odyssey adventure, he clings to the hope that some day he can freely love her. I don't reveal her response in the reflection of his helmet because I want the reader to use their imagination.

“My bounty is as boundless as the sea,
My love as deep; the more I give to thee,
The more I have, for both are infinite.”
Shakespeare - Romeo & Juliet

Step-By-Step

1. Begin by sketching in rough edges, form, and areas of light.

2. Start with a light wash of watercolors to blend in a background through wet-on-wet.

3. Add in warm tones to show foreground area versus background.

4. Add detail to the folds of his jacket and begin with ink washes.

5. Add thicker layer of black ink to the outlined areas and shadows.

6. Use a splatter technique to create the sky area. For information on how to do this check out my step-by-step video

Finally, if you haven't read Romeo & Juliet, then please do! It's pretty awesome.
