What is the most important palette for watercolor artists?

I have been on the lookout for the best palette for years. On a day when I have less work, I might go by the Art Supply Warehouse and browse for supplies I need. Occasionally I try out a new palette. I’ve tried them all and owned all of the ones they have in stock. It seems like every artist has one item they just cannot live without. For me it’s always my paint brush and palette. Most of the time It comes down to artist’s preference. There is one item, however, that doesn’t rely on preference.

Watercolor artists talk about this a lot if they are trained in botanical art. Ceramic plates are the best for watercolor painting for a variety of reasons.

  • Ceramic plates are the best surface for painting with watercolors.

  • Watercolors don’t cling to them. Watercolors mix better on them.

  • Ceramic doesn’t bead or stain.

There’s a great video below from another artist who demonstrates why ceramic is the best palette you can use for watercolors.
